I took vacation last month in South Texas, and it was wonderful, except for the $100 bill wasted at a restaurant called "Ron & Nancy's Little Italy" in Weslaco, down there by McAllen. The owners took a $140,000 loan from the SBA last year and turned an old Arbys into an Italian restaurant.
I should have realized I wasn't going to like the place when I saw that it was "smoke free". The menus arrived, and I saw a blurb on the menu that said the owner had once shaken hands with Tony Danza. As if that explained why the prices were about twice what you'd expect. Incidentally, Tony Danza is a no-talent assclown, and I am not impressed. The next thing I noticed was a tiny stage with a keyboard and a karaoke setup, where the owner, Ron, performs some lame-ass songs until you want to fucking scream. The salad came. Nothing but fucking lettuce, and a half of a tiny cherry tomato. What the fuck happened to the other half? Micky Dee has better salads. Then the ravioli arrived, and I promise you it was not as good as Franco American straight out of the can. It wasn't home made, it was cut out of lasagna noodles and filled with a smidge of watery ricotta. The "signature" sauce was vintage Ragu. This shit was over $20 all by itself. Incidentally, the menu prices were what you'd expect to pay at a beach resort, not a converted Arbys.
When the bill came, someone made a "mistake" and they accidentally charged $10 too much. The whole experience sucked.
If you're going to open a place and call it "Little Italy", then for Gods sake, live up to the name. Italian motherfuckers know how to feed you. They have pizzas baking in ovens, mysterious smells emanating from their kitchens, and the whole thing is going to be about $25 or less. Italians don't care if you smoke, and most of them are embarrassed to be from the same planet as Tony fucking Danza. I blame the Small Business Administration for letting this dumbass karaoke guy have my tax dollars to perpetrate this hoax against Italian food lovers.
